Chapter 3: An Explosive Party

As Maggie licked her lips, she did what Zale use to call “The circus jump.” Flan and Zale rushed to rescue the human-tops, but missed three of them. Maggie beat the girls to them and crushed them.

Zale wanted to cry, but when Flan snapped her out of it they ran with a drooling Maggie right on their heels. Meanwhile, Slain collected the crushed human-tops to make one of his wild dishes or drinks. While Zale was trying to think of a place to run and hide, Maggie clung on Zale’s leg with her sharp claws.

“Ouch! Flan, help me! I’m about to fall!” Zale said in pain.

Flan did all she could, but didn’t succeed. When the baby kitten saw what was happening, it got really excited and jumped at Maggie thinking this was a fun play-fight.

“Uh… Little kitten! Get back here!” Zale said worried. The kitten landed with its hind legs in Maggie’s eyes.

Maggie couldn’t see what was happening and said, “Get off of me you filthy black cat! Ow! Stop biting my tail!” The cat turned about and put its front legs in front of Maggie’s eyes, jumped off, and ran after Zale.

“Thank—“Maggie didn’t notice the wall right in front of her face and ran into it.

“Catch the turtle by the railroad if it falls then write me,” Maggie sang the beginning of the old nursery song she used to listen to with Zale and passed out.

Zale came up with an idea and told Flan to follow her to the bedroom. When Zale and Flan finally got to her room, she told Flan to follow her into her closet and through a secret compartment up to the attic. They hid the human-tops under a dusty old blanket in a far corner. Zale then made a little bed for her new kitten and told her to stay put. The girls took a different way downstairs and found Slain cooking what smelled like Top-Coffee. It didn’t smell like his usual Top-Coffee.

“Well, hurry up, we are going to be late for the birthday party,” Slain suddenly said behind a mouthful of cream.

Zale and Flan loaded themselves up in the van and Slain got inside. When they finally got to the party, the customer was very angry. While Zale and Flan walked around to the gift room where hundreds of gifts were stacked up high. A boy wearing a very fancy tuxedo was crying, “I wanted one hundred not ninety-four presents!”

“Well this is as much as we could afford! This whole party cost nine thousand dollars! That clown magician was expensive too! U,h what a BRAT!” said the dad.

“Man,” Zale thought. “This kid must be very spoiled”.

“What?” said Flan, “Did you tell me something?”

“I didn’t say anything. I was thinking for a second”. Zale paused. She remembered once that her dad could speak through minds.

“Flan, remember that one time I told you that my dad could speak through minds?” Zale said.

“Yeah, so?”

“Well, I think I can. What you just heard were my thoughts.”

“Sweet! Now, we can have secret conversations.” Flan said excitedly.

Zale gave Flan a worried look. “You don’t get the point! Whatever.” Zale walked away in frustration. Zale did not like that she was becoming like her father, not one bit. Flan and Zale played a couple of party games and started to watched Slain do his potion act.

“Can I please have a volunteer from the audience?” Slain announced.

All of the children at the party raised their hands with excitement.

“What about you, Zale?” Slain motioned for her to come over to him. All of the other children let out a sigh. Zale clenched her fists, frowned, grinded her teeth, and held her arms at her side.

“Come on, we don’t have all day!” Slain said. Zale crossed her arms and walked very slowly over to Slain.

“Pick two different potions from the table and pour in the silver powder.” Slain instructed Zale.

Zale chooses two different potions and looks at all different colored powders on the table. She couldn’t tell the difference between the gray and silver powders. The children started to get restless.

“I’m bored! Boring! BBbooooooooooo!” screamed a few of them.

Slain get close to Zale and nudges her, “The silver one is right in front of you – just pick it up!”

Zale quickly grabbed the vile of powder and poured it into the potions.

“Now, watch as this bubbling pot of potions and powder turns into a rose bush!” Slain exclaimed to the audience. After Zale poured in the powder, the liquid began to glow different shades of red and sparks began to fly out from the pot into the audience.

“Ahh! Run away it’s going to explode!” yelled the birthday boy.

Slain turned around and his eyes expanded as wide as his stomach. “You put the gray powder in – no the silver!” he yelled at Zale.

“Well, how come you didn’t do it, you’re the magician. You were rushing me, I couldn’t tell which color was which!” Zale defended herself.

“Take cover – it’s going to blow!” Flan yelled. The entire party stampeded outside. Slain grabs a rainbow colored powder and pour it into the bubbling mixture. The spark slowed and finally stopped. The mixture turned into a rose bush. The birthday boy’s dad storms back into the house.

“I want a refund! You almost blew up my entire house! Do you know how much this all cost me?” he yelled as his face turned red.

“Well, I didn’t blow up the house. Everything turned out as planned. I just added a little excitement. You got exactly what you paid for.” Slain said.

“GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!” the father screamed at the top of his lungs. Slain packed up his stuff and left the house for good. Zale and Flan followed him.

When all three of them got home, Slain turned to Zale and said, “Go to your room. I don’t want to see you.”

“My pleasure” Zale said sarcastically.

Chapter 2: An Appetite for Tops

As the sparks flew, the tops in the cabinet changed shapes, sizes, and color. By six in the morning, Zale woke up before her father and Maggie rose up from their beds like zombies from the grave.

Zale and Flan went into the lab and saw what they didn’t expect to see.

“What?!” Zale almost screamed. “This can’t be. I mean, the counters and cabinets are clean! I mean, SPOTLESS!” Zale thought she had a heart attack because her plan to wreck the lab backfired.

“I know. You said you hid them in the cabinet, right?” said Flan.

“Yeah, and….” Zale was taking deep breaths.

“Look,” Flan opened the cabinet door all the way. “No tops, but…Uh oh…” Flan gasped! “Maybe your father found out and already cleaned up the mess? I mean, we’re the only ones in the castle. I don’t think Maggie would want to mess up the lab either.”

“No, he couldn’t have, I mean he was asleep!” Zale screamed.

“Let’s hope he didn’t find out.” Flan jumped when there was a loud thump….and then another.

“Zale, Flan, are you awake? I need to talk to you both” yelled Slain from the star gazing corridor. They both got a horrible feeling in the pit of their stomachs. They walked out of the lab as slow as they could and met Slain in the corridor.

“Ah, there you are”, said Slain with the tired and hungry Maggie in his arms. “Zale, Flan, Would you like to go with me to the birthday party where I will be doing my potion act?” asked Slain anxiously hoping the girls would approve.

The girls took a silent sigh of relief.

“Um,…no tha---“ Zale was interrupted by Flan.

“Of course!” Flan exclaimed.

“Okay, wake up and get dressed. We are going to leave at noon. Flan, I called your mom and she said it was alright.” He said as his stomach growled. “I’m hungry for some top soup for breakfast”. Slain put Maggie on the floor and walked away doing a little dance of joy.

After Slain turned his back, Zale exclaimed, “WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!” to Flan. Flan felt her heart jump into her lungs.

Maggie got a stern look on her face. “Alright, what are you hiding?” asked Maggie.

“What do you mean, we’re not hiding anything” explained Flan.

“I can tell that you’re hiding something. I can see it in your eyes”, Maggie hissed.

Zale became impatient, “We’re hiding nothing Maggie. Now that’s final. Go and get breakfast.” Zale turned to Flan and whispered, “Man, Maggie used to be fun when I was little. Now she’s so mean.”

Maggie turned, stuck her tail in the air, and pranced away. Flan got a curious look on her face. “No wonder”, said Flan.

“No wonder what?” Zale looked confused.

“No wonder your father has thousands of tops. He eats them!” Flan looked disgusted.

“Maggie does too. Come on, let’s go get dressed. I’m hungr—“ Zale stopped.

“What?” asked Flan.

“Nothing. I thought I saw a tiny shadow with a top bottom. Dad must have dropped a top from one of his sleeves. Well, come on. I will look later” Zale turned around and walked with Flan up some steps and through a few corridors back to her room.

Zale and Flan got dressed in a pair of warm clothes. The weather outside was rough and the girls could hear claps of thunder and crackles of lightning.

“Man, it’s raining hard”, said Flan.

“I know. It’s a good thing I have an extra jacket for you” Zale offered Flan a jacket.

Zale and Flan walked down the stairs to breakfast following the sweet aroma of cranberry toaster waffles and orange juice mixed with apple juice. Slain served the girls their breakfast and asked, “Do you want top soup on the side?”

“Ick, gross, no way!” said Flan and Zale with disgust.

They all heard a knock on the front door and Zale had to take a long walk to answer it. Slain followed behind quietly. When Zale answered it, she saw a little girl holding a basket with twelve or more black and grey kittens.

“Would you like a free cat?” the little girl asked.

“Of course she would” Slain made Zale jump and she gave him an argumentative look.

“What color would she like Mister?” the girl asked.

“She’ll go ahead and have black” said Slain.

“What color eyes?” the girl said.

“Um, green if you have any. That’s her favorite color” Slain said knowing Zale loves green. The girl gave a green-eyed, black cat with a grey spot on its foreleg hip to Zale. The girl left without saying thanks for taking the cat.

“Dad did you plan for her to come here or pay her to come here?” Zale asked inquisitively. She remembered telling her father she wanted a pet cat before.

“No, she just came unexpectedly. I have heard that there is a little girl going around town selling free cats. Awkward.” Slain rolled his eyes. “But, it’s a good thing because now you have a familiar”. Slain walked away with a slight smile on his face.

Zale scrunched up her face and said, “But, I just want a cute pet.
Half-way to the dining room, Slain said, “I’ll make a potion for it to talk like Maggie and you also need to name it.”

“Another talking pet, dad, really?” Zale whined with annoyance.

Flan came running down the hall with excitement to see the kitten. “That’s a pretty kitty, can I have one too?” Flan said with awe.

“I just knew you would want one. Well, I don’t know where that little girl is going.” Zale said. “Maybe she’ll stop by your neighborhood—“ Zale dropped her jaw and almost fainted.

“What now?” Flan exclaimed turning around. Flan also dropped her jaw. Zale and Flan could not believe their eyes. A group of about 15, six-inch tall creatures with top spinner for legs and human features for a torso were standing around them in the hallway. They had faint squiggly lines on their spinners that matched the tops Zale had put in the cabinet last night. Zale’s mind raced a hundred miles per hour.

“Those are the exact same tops I put in the cabinet last night. How could they come alive?.....It must have been the potion I mixed…oh no….I AM a magician!”

The creatures stared up at the girls with big, wide eyes.

“What are those things?” Flan said with a dizzy look in her eyes.

“I don’t know. But they look like the tops that I mixed in with that potion last night”. Zale said.

“They look so cute. Maybe we should hide them from your dad and Maggie. They’ll probably want to –“ Flan was cut off by Slain and Maggie drooling words out of their mouths and surprising them from behind.

“Eat them!” Slain and Maggie said at the same time. “We’ve had an appetite for top stew.” Slain said rubbing his hands together.

“Half-Human tops at that!” Maggie added licking her lips. Zale and Flan exchanged nervous looks hoping they could save the little guys from begin served for breakfast.

Chapter 1: The Magician’s Tops

One cold, winter day in December, the great magician, Slain Flack, was working on his potions for his act the next day. Slain’s famous potion act is always welcome at local birthday parties and special occasions. He loves to show off his talents to an audience. Slain and his daughter, Zale, lived in a castle in England. Zale’s mother went missing while she was shopping in the market place one day. Since then, Slain has been working more hours than he stays at home. Slain was about to mix the potion for this final act, when he heard Zale call to him.

“Dad!” said Zale. “Maggie keeps biting my dolls!” Zale came thumping down the wooden castle stairs with Maggie, the talking ferret, in her arms.

“They are called Voodoo Dolls dear, Voodoo Dolls”, said Slain. Slain wants his daughter to become a great magician like him, but Zale just wants to have a normal life.

“I don’t care what they’re called! Just make her stop! I’m trying to play with them.” Zale exclaimed. Zale was playing with her best friend Flan in her room today. They were having a slumber party and Maggie kept disrupting them.

In Maggie’s small jaws was a doll wrapped in a pink and brown dress with pink and yellow sparkled Barbie shoes. There were no needles in the doll because Zale doesn’t hate anybody at her school that much to hurt them.

“Why doesn’t this doll have any needles in it? Don’t you hate anybody? Don’t you want to practice your magic skills?” Slain stopped with frustration and changed the subject. “Go up to your room!” shouted Slain as he turned back to his potion act.

“But –,” Zale was interrupted by her father’s magical thunder clap, ran up to her room, and slammed the door.

Slain sat down and fiddled with his spinner tops. He couldn’t help but think about Zale and her dislike of anything magical. He desperately wanted her to enjoy magic as much as he did, but he didn’t know how to talk to her in a way that would make her understand him.

“If only her mother were here, everything would be fine,” he sighed deeply. Then, he started to think about tomorrow’s potion act.

“THAT’S IT!” he said so loud that Maggie jumped with sudden excitement. “I’ll take her to the potion act tomorrow,” he suggested.

“Don’t you see that she’ll mess it up?” said Maggie with a worried look on her face.

“You worry too much. Why did I even give you the power to speak?” said Slain.

Slain’s familiar snapped, “Well, you wouldn’t have so many good ideas if it weren’t for me!” Maggie hissed, turned around, jumped off the table, and walked out of the potion lab.

Meanwhile, Zale and Flan were in Zale’s top tower room talking about Slain deep into the night.

“I don’t know, I mean, he always pushes me back!” said Zale.

“Well maybe you should come live with me,” said Zale’s best friend Flan.

“Flan, I’m eight years old! I can’t just leave.” Zale thought about how Slain would feel if she left, but could only focus on a way to get back at Slain.

“I got it! I’ll sneak into his lab right now and mess up his tops! He’s got to be in bed by now. Thank you Flan.” Zale got up quietly, tipped-toed down the stairs, and went into Slain’s potion lab where he kept all his tops and potions.

“Ok, I’ve got the tops, but where’s the right potions?” Zale asked herself. Zale had no success and picked a black, blue, and purple potion to mix together.

“Now, the moment of truth,” Zale used her father’s favorite phrase. She poured the potion mix on the tops, hid the tops in the back of a cabinet, and ran back up to her room.

Once Zale made it back safely, she asked Flan, “Want to watch a movie?”

“Sure!”

As Flan and Zale slept, neither of them noticed the bright flashes coming from the lab’s cabinet. Zale’s potion mix lit up the entire cabinet and sent sparks flying throughout the lab.
